Contraception

Contraception is a term that refers to the various methods of birth control available to men and women today. The range of contraceptive options can include temporary options such as hormone medications, devices such as the contraceptive sponge, and permanent options that involve surgery. At our clinic, we’re proud to offer women a full range of contraceptive services to aid them in making the choices that are right for their family planning goals. Our physicians will work with you to help you achieve your goals and manage your life choices, whether it’s to have a baby in the future or secure a child-free life.

What Reversible Contraceptive Options Are Available?

As part of the contraceptive options that we provide, we provide a selection of reversible choices. These choices are perfect for those who aren’t ready to have children, or have had one or more children and intend to have more. A large variety of options are available, but the most common are listed below:

  • Birth Control Pills – These pills make it possible for women to manage their reproductive options by taking a daily pill. In addition to preventing pregnancy, these pills are sometimes used to manage hormone imbalances and menstrual problems.
  • NuvaRing – This is a reversible form of birth control that is applied by the women in a 3-week on, 1-week off cycle. This provides excellent control of your cycle without requiring any additional maintenance.
  • Nexplanon – This device is insertable and can remain in place and be effective for up to 3 years. It works by releasing progestin over time, which is effective in preventing pregnancy.
  • IUD (Intrauterine Device) – This form of birth control is inserted into the uterus through the cervix and can prevent pregnancy for up to 10 years before needing to be replaced without the use of hormones.
  • Liletta – This form of contraceptive has an effective period of up to 3 years. It is used for reducing how many days the patient bleeds during the month, but does require regular monitoring.

What Permanent Contraceptive Options Are Available?

Patients who are done having children, or have opted to have a child-free life can take advantage of our permanent contraceptive options. These options provide a permanent solution that is generally irreversible.

  • Tubal Ligation – This procedure involves the Fallopian tubes being cut and sealed to prevent the body from releasing eggs.
  • Tubal Occlusion (essure) – This process involves the implantation of a barrier into the Fallopian tube to prevent the release of eggs. This procedure requires three months of alternative birth control prior to its insertion.

Questions You May Have For Your Women’s Health Practitioner

We encourage our patients to educate themselves about the treatments and birth control options they see us for. When you’re discussing contraceptive choices with your physician, consider asking the following questions:

  • Which Birth Control Is Best For My Needs? Not all birth control options are right for every patient, so this is an important question to ask your physician. What determines your best option is determined by your sexual activity level, how many partners you have, and whether or not you ever intend to have children.
  • Are Permanent Birth Control Options Available? We’re proud to empower our patients to make the contraceptive choices that are right for their life. Whether you’re waiting to have your first child, want to space out your children, or are choosing a child-free life, we’re ready to support you.
  • Are Prescriptions Necessary For Birth Control? Many forms of birth control are not available without a prescription. Hormonal birth controls, in particular, will require a prescription and a trip to your pharmacy.
